Amberley Wildbrooks

Final stop of the day was to Amberley Wildbrooks. It had just started raining, but it didn't last long. All seemed pretty quiet in the gloom. I got up adjacent to the abattoir and noticed a bird quartering distantly. It was an owl, and surely the Short-eared Owl I've been wanting to add to my life list for some time. It certainly wasn't pale enough for Barn Owl. It was very distant and I wanted to be sure, because a Long-eared Owl has quite similar plumage pattern. I managed a bit of grainy video and from that was able to make out the plumage pattern. The wing tips were clearly solid black rather than barred, thus confirming the identification as Short-eared Owl. I then spotted one of the ringtail Hen Harriers quartering. I thought it and the Short-eared Owl started grappling, but when I got a good view I noticed there was a second Short-eared Owl. Marvelous finish to the day.
